ISTE Conference to Leverage the Experience of North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF) and Demonstrate the Depth of Scholastic Esports for STEM Education, CTE, and Social-Emotional Learning
Dec 02, 2020(Newport Beach, Calif. – December 2, 2020) – NASEF, the North America Scholastic Esports Federation, is sharing practical experience at several sessions at the ISTE 20 Conference to support educators in their quest to leverage youth interest in gaming and esports for meaningful education on life and career skills.
NASEF focuses on various careers within and outside of the esports industry, promoting college and career readiness and reaching a diverse and inclusive population of students. ISTE standards have been considered and incorporated into learning opportunities, along with Common Core, CASEL, and NGSS. Alignment to specific standards is outlined in many downloads and program overviews, and even less-structured events like Beyond the Game™ challenges and the Digital Rube Goldberg Machine Contest.
NASEF curriculum covers classroom topics like English Language Arts and several Career Technical Education (CTE) tracks. Its clubs provide opportunities for all students to participate in engaging gameplay and tournaments, at the same time benefiting from meaningful mentorship from coaches and General Managers. Research from the University of California, Irvine, demonstrates that NASEF masterfully combines play and learning for students.
“NASEF carefully develops its learning tools with student outcomes top-of-mind. Alignment to ISTE standards and others ensures that we zero in on critical skills and concepts,” said Tom Turner, chief education officer.
“Program development is led by the Orange County (CA) Department of Education and informed by critical research into student outcomes,” said Gerald Solomon, founder and executive director of NASEF. Additional input on applicability and evolution of teaching practices is provided by scholastic fellows that are currently using esports for education around the world.”
At ISTE Conference sessions, educators who are implementing these programs will discuss their experience and provide suggestions. A full day to get immersed in the esports experience is planned for Saturday, December 5, including teachers sharing their stories of scholastic esports classes and programs, students describing what they’re learning through esports, and mini-tournaments where students will not only play esports games but will demonstrate career skills such as shoutcasting, streaming, and more.
